Casa de la Vila – Town Hall

The Casa de la Vila, home to the Camprodon Town Council, is representative of the civic Catalan Gothic style of architecture. The uniqueness of the town hall, characterised by its exceptional façade, has earned it the honour of being reproduced as part of Barcelona’s Poble Espanyol architectural village.

In medieval times, the ‘verguer’ was the royal representative in Camprodon, while a municipal government was simultaneously formed, made up of three representative consuls, who were appointed on an annual basis by the outgoing officials. In order to establish a system for their election, the ‘Rule of Sortition’ was later established. However, as a result of the Nova Planta Decree, the administration of Camprodon was transferred to the jurisdiction of Vic and was subsequently ruled by a city mayor until the town was integrated into the administrative district of Puigcerdà.

A painting by Manel Surroca that hangs in the Casa de la Vila depicts the legend of the three pilgrims, corresponding to the literary work of the poet Joan Maria Guasch.
